Ate here last night with my wife and it was delicious. The atmosphere is trendy and modern. There was live music (bonus) - a really talented saxophone player with a back-up track played through his laptop. Someone get this guy some live musicians to play with!!

For drinks I had one of those huge Sapporo beers and they had a special buy-one-get-one-free Martini deal which my wife took advantage of. The dirty martini was clearly not 'top shelf' but not bad, in my opinion. My wife did not like it - she wanted more olive juice and ended up putting soy sauce in the second one (disgusting).

For an appetizer, we started with some spicy seared Ahi Tuna. It had a crust of black pepper and was topped with some Sriracha sauce. Spicy goodness.

For the sushi rolls we had a spicy tuna roll (self-explanatory); a dynamite roll - it had shrimp tempura, crab, avocado, cucumber, and was delicious (my wife instituted a rule that requires you to say it like JJ from Good Times); and a Fire Dragon Roll - Eel and avocado topped with cucumber, crab, spicy mayo. This was a bit outside my comfort zone as I am not a big eel fan but was good.

We finished it off with a banana tempura desert. It was a mountain of vanilla ice cream and whipped cream with tempura bananas (duh). The bananas were awesome - I could have done without so much ice cream and whipped cream. The desert was a bit uninspired compared to the elegant appetizer and sushi...

All in all a great experience and I would definitely recommend for someone looking for sushi downtown. Would be a great place to start a night out on the town!

I have to say ...sushi is not really my thing...it is an intimidating food, so when my sister chose this place for her 26th birthday dinner, I ate before we went. Ha! What a mistake! This is her favorite sushi place. She raves about it and scores discounted gift cards online. We had $50 in gift cards and the waiter (Corey) was very pleasant, allowing us to use two and was very accommodating the whole evening.

Audra accidentally made her reservation for Saturday, not Friday, but they still found us a table on Final Four weekend in the back where we could celebrate and be loud. The atmosphere and ambiance was nice, simple and sexy. I love darker restaurants with low lighting. You can still see well enough to order and enjoy watching the sushi rollers. :)

Corey was great! I wanted a lemon drop martini which is not on the martini list, but he made sure I got what I wanted....we ordered several different sushi rolls, my favorite being the Playboy and the Rock and Roll. I highly recommend both, from a non-sushi eater...the other 6 ladies would agree, as we all ordered MORE after the first round. They were just spicy enough to have a kick but not so spicy you couldn't eat more than one. :)

Overall, I was impressed and would go back if I was in the mood for sushi. A little pricey, but I assume that is how sushi is...I would prefer to pay more, get great service and enjoy the ambiance than pay less, have bad sushi and leave never wanting to eat raw fish again. But that was not the case with SOTR. Check it out if you are downtown, though I might avoid it when Butler is in the Final Four....craziness!

I recommend Sushi on the Rocks to EVERYONE! Sushi on the Rocks must be under new management because the service has greatly improved in the past 6 months. Being the sushi lover that I am, I have dined at this restaurant for the last year or so. Working in the hospitality industry myself, I have seen visible improvement in the overall function of the restaurant. The staff seems to be responsible and genuinely charming to guests. They have new drink specials and the half-price sushi during the week is still unbeatable. Service can get a little slower during the happy hour which is expected because the restaurant is packed, but as long as you arrive before 6:30pm you will still get the discount. The live entertainment is unique a greatly differs from your typical elevator music played at other restaurants. I like to come here for dinner and drinks before going out with my friends. The sushi is some of the best I have ever had, the playboy and snow mountain roles are out of this world! Give it a shot!
